Happy Tails: Ryan

By Jamie Emming, Satellite Adoption Manager

Look at those big brown eyes and floppy pink tongue! Ryan, the 1-year-old Basset hound mix, was the very definition of cute and wrinkly! This all changed for us when we’d clip on a leash. The normally rolypoly hotdog would turn into a badger wanting to pull this way and that. Add another dog to the mix and your problems would only escalate as Ryan would bark and pull without you knowing if he wanted to make friends with the other dog or if his intentions were less than amiable.

Luckily, Ryan had come to the right place to find a new home! At HSSV, we see lots of dogs with manageable behavioral challenges. Our Behavior Team set to work making up a plan of action to keep the 33 lb hound happy and work with our Adoptions Staff to find him the right home. A specialized group of trained volunteers stepped in to take Ryan on walks in places he wouldn’t see other dogs and get him accustomed to walking on a leash and focus on his human handler rather than any distractions.

While Ryan had many suitors during his time at HSSV, the right family didn’t come along until Ryan met Richard, Tanya, and their young son. After an initial meeting where Ryan did well with their six-year-old son, they returned the next day to sit down with one of our behaviorists and form a plan to continue Ryan’s training post-adoption. Tanya had already purchased all of our recommended reading for Ryan and finished the first book, “Feisty Fido” overnight.

A month later the family updated us on Ryan’s progress. The couple work from home and all the attention Ryan has been getting has really paid off. He’s walking great on leash and is less interested in other dogs now that he has a family to focus on. Ryan loves their son, following him all around the house. Because of their care and devotion through training Ryan’s behavioral problems are now a thing of the past as he enjoys his new life as one of the family.

Mickey & Lucky Still Need Your Help
By Amber N. Yoo, HSSV Volunteer

Last week, Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) shined the spotlight on Mickey & Lucky, two Boston Terriers who need a home of their own. The two are still available for adoption, and so I'm asking for your help to find this dynamic duo a deserving family.

"We've decided to make Mickey & Lucky our featured pets for an extra week," explained Nichole Boudreau, director of customer relations for HSSV. "We hope the continued exposure will help find them a loving home."

Mickey & Lucky are part of the Homeward Bound program, which means their adoption fees have been waived. The best friends will go home spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

I'm particularly fond of Mickey & Lucky because two of my best friends have Boston Terriers. BT's are funny, energetic and eager to please. They could play fetch for hours, but they also love a good cuddle session. If you want some extra sunshine in your life, I hope you will visit Mickey & Lucky at Humane Society Silicon Valley, in Milpitas. Learn How to Adopt Mickey & Lucky!

Already have a furry family member? There are other ways you can help these two...

Happy Tails: Kozmo

By Jamie Emming, Satellite Adoption Manager

Whenever I am feeling in a bit of a funk, I schedule myself a haircut. It’s the same sense of renewal our animals get when they go in for a long awaited clip and blow out. When we first met Kozmo he was overdue for some attention to his long locks. The poodle’s first helping hands were from an HSSV adopter who found the dog loose in the street. Since their dog had come from HSSV, they knew exactly where to take the Sunnyvale stray they rescued.

We had immediate interest in the shaggy teenager, who met several families before being put on hold for Patti who grew up with poodles and was prepared for their grooming commitment. Most dogs have a double coat with a top layer and an undercoat. The undercoat is what most dogs shed when the weather gets warmer. Poodles lack an undercoat, but their dense curly fur grows just like our hair and requires regular trips to a grooming salon. This doesn’t mean they don’t shed. If you’ve ever lived with someone with long hair you know how even people can leave hair cast offs.

To Kozmo’s delight, Patti returned the next day with her husband. They met with one of our Adoptions counselors to make a plan that would allow Kozmo to spend most of the day with a human companion, as he loves being with people. We also got his new family on the right track with his training, and he’s now attending private classes with a professional canine educator. When Patti sent us photos of Kozmo’s new haircut and she wrote, “I may be biased, but he is one of the cutest dogs I have ever seen!” I could practically see her beaming with pride. I think that’s how all of us animal parents feel about our furry children.

Do you have a furry family member in need of a makeover? Make your grooming appointment at our Animal Community Center’s doggie salon today, where all sales go to the tales.
