Jack Facts: Five Things You Didn’t Know About Jack RussellTerriers

Jack Russell, who developed the breed, was a priest. Priests are also called Parsons, hence the Parsons Russell Terrier.
They were originally bred to hunt small vermin, terrier means go to ground.
Some of the shorter Jack Russell Terriers actually have a form of dwarfism.
The breed was created in the 1800’s but not recognized bythe AKC until 1997.
Looking for a couch potato? Keep looking! Jack Russells are independent, athletic and require a lot amount of exercise. They excel in dog sports and make great jogging partners.

Lucy Kate: A Happy Little Dog With A Sad Past

Lucy Kate has had a rough first year.

We originally met this preternaturally soft chi mix when she arrived in November with her sister, Juliet. Barely three months old and a little shy, she stayed with us for a month before she went home with a single woman who lived alone. She was lucky enough to have a stay-at-home dog Mom, so little Lucy Kate was never alone.

Tragedy struck in May when her person passed away unexpectedly and Lucy Kate was returned to HSSV. In those first few days back at HSSV we discovered this little girl could make a large amount of noise. And quickly she began to out smart us, realizing her yelping and crying would bring people rushing to her room. We got this clever chi on a schedule so visits and walks were something she could expect at certain times. The consistency calmed her down and she learned to enjoy her alone time, something she wasn't used to before her owner died.

If you walk by her room now, you can sometimes spot her wrestling with her blanket or chewing a toy. While she learned how to play independently this time around, she'd still rather be snuggled up on your lap. If you are looking for someone who will always dance with delight when you come home, spend some time with Lucy Kate. She's ready to make you her next happy ending.

Florence and the Kitty Boycott

Looking for a sassy cat? Then Florence is your girl! We're all fairly sure if she could talk, this is what she'd say...

GET ME OUT OF HERE! I am soooo tired of having to put up with the kitties in the cage next to me, looking soooo adorable and cute. They’re always poking and prodding me, and making funny noises that distract the people who are looking at my gorgeous mane. I just want to go home and cuddle with you, and I promise I’ll earn my keep by keeping the bed warm for you at night- No more heating bills for you!

Puppy Corner

Along the far side of our dog adoption galleria, you'll find puppy corner. Since they look full grown, most visitors don’t realize these guys are just starting adolescence. With big grins and unique stories they are ready for you to start their puppy parenting.

Thelma - Grace, Speed and Beauty

The youngest of the bunch, this pup is just three months old. Thelma came in with her sister, Louise.  Louise was quickly adopted but gorgeous, gazelle-like Thelma is still waiting. An athletic superstar, Thelma outpaces all her playmates. Patterned with faint brindle striping that’s difficult to see from a distance, she’s an irresistible combination or beauty and spunk.

Forest - Three Legged Wonderpup

Eight month old Forest was transferred in from a different shelter. He was turned in with an injury that necessitated amputation of his rear leg. It usually takes adopters a few minutes to realize he’s missing something – he’s just as playful as any other puppy and twice as graceful and quick.

Tucker - A Party on Paws

Don’t let Tucker’s diminutive size fool you. Behind his sweet little Chihuahua exterior lurks the heart of a Labrador. Tucker is a fetching machine. As long as you keep throwing his little yellow donut, he’ll keep retrieving it. At six months old he has boundless energy to keep playing. He loves romping with his roommates and enjoys a good cuddle from volunteers and staff.
